Mubarak Jassim Kanoo,  a Bahrain-based business magnate and Chairman of Yusuf bin Ahmed Kanoo Group (YBA), passed away early morning on February 12, 2018.

One of the largest business groups in the region, YBA Kanoo’s business interests include shipping, travel, machinery, chemicals, logistics, property, energy, technology and retail, to name a few.

Born in Bahrain in 1930, Mr. Kanoo was a well-known name among the business elite in Bahrain and has played a significant role in growing Kanoo Group over the years.

In 1951, he took over the family’s travel business, which had just three employees at the time. Today the YBA group has over 4,000 employees. Regionally Kanoo Group has operations in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the U.A.E., Oman and Egypt. The conglomerate is also present in markets such as the U.K., France and India.

Mr. Kanoo was the chairman of AXA Gulf Insurance, a company born out of partnership with French insurance giant Axa to operate in the region.

In 1984, Mr. Kanoo’s role in strengthening commercial relations with Britain was recognized by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and received the Honorary Knight Commander of the British Empire.
