UK-based artist Banksy arranged one of his well-known painting Girl With Balloon to self-destruct by shredding itself soon after it was auctioned for $1.4 million.

The painting, which was sold to an undisclosed buyer, passed through a concealed shredder within the picture frame as soon as the sale was finalized at an auction at Sotheby’s in London.

“It appears we just got Banksy-ed,” said Alex Branczik, Senior Director and Head of Contemporary Art, Europe London.

The stunt comes as the artist posted a video on his Instagram page that showed a shredder being fitted into the frame of the painting.

The post was accompanied by the following caption: “A few years ago I secretly built a shredder into a painting… in case it was ever put up for an auction.”

Girl With Balloon, which depicts the image of a lone young girl stretching to reach out to a red balloon, is one of Banksy’s most iconic works and has enjoyed a consistent appreciation in value.

Art experts predict that the value of the painting could have almost doubled with the latest stunt that has received widespread media attention.

The picture of Girl With Balloon first appeared as street art in London in 2002 while the painting that was sold at Sotheby’s was produced in 2006. It used spray paint and acrylic on canvas and was mounted on a board.

The painting was initially worth $391,673.
