Jordan-based online Arabic content platform, Mawdoo3.com, has secured a further $10 million in the final closing of its Series B round, bringing total funding to $23.5 million.
In July 2018, Mawdoo3.com raised $13.5 million in the initial closing of the round, which was used to launch “Salma”, an Arabic personal voice assistant powered by Arabic-native AI and machine learning. Salma already provides brief answers to questions on general topics, and can be used by companies in different sectors to better interact with their customers through voice services.
The round was led by UK-based Kingsway Capital, US-based Endure Capital, Endeavor Catalyst, AdamTech Ventures and Equitrust, which is the investment arm of Choueiri group.
Launched in 2012, by Rami Al-Qawasmi and Mohammad Jaber, Mawdoo3.com began as a mission to enrich Arabic content on the internet, using technology and artificial intelligence techniques to diminish the gap between Arabic online content and the growing number of Arabic internet users.
The platform is considered one of the biggest websites providing digital content in Arabic, receiving over 50 million unique Arab users per month searching for answers and information in their native language.
“This strategic investment will be used for the launch of Ujeeb.com—a digital platform enabling Arab users to ask questions, and receive detailed answers from experts, specialists, and individuals who have shared similar experiences around the world,” said Dr Mohammad Jaber, Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer at Mawdoo3.com.
Jaber confirmed that the number of answers on Ujeeb.com has exceeded 200,000 so far, with the team aiming to reach 10 million answers by the end of the platform’s first year.
He added: “We believe that Ujeeb.com will fulfil a vital need in the Arab world through a unique, more interactive type of Arabic content that Mawdoo3.com, our flagship website, does not cover.
The Ujeeb.com platform will be supported by AI techniques and tools to optimize the users’ experience while browsing the platform, and ensure its customization to their interests and needs.
Mawdoo3.com was ranked 6th in Forbes Middle East’s list “Top 100 Startups in the Middle East 2018”.
