Abu Dhabi is launching the first graduate level, research-based AI university in the world, set to open in September 2020. The announcement was made at a press conference at the University campus in Masdar city on Wednesday.

The pioneering institution will be named the “Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence” (MBZUAI), after His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. The first of its kind research-led university will offer postgraduate and post-doctorate level programs in key disciplines of AI such as machine learning, natural language processing and computer vision.

All admitted students will benefit from a full scholarship by the MBZUAI, plus funding for non-academic expenses such as a health insurance and accommodation. The University will work with leading local and global companies to secure internships, and will also assist students in finding employment opportunities. It plans to bring together experts from the AI community for regional and international conferences, workshops and seminars.

Professor Sir Michael Brady, Interim President of MBZUAI, said, “Following decades of research into machine learning and artificial intelligence, we are now at a turning point in the widespread application of advanced intelligence. That evolution is—among other things—creating exciting new career opportunities in nearly every sector of society. At MBZUAI, we will support students to capture those opportunities and to magnify their contribution to the field of AI globally."

The establishment of the AI university aligns with the country’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2031. Using state-of-the-art technology and innovative solutions, the vision is to position the UAE as a global leader in AI by 2031, entering a global market expected to be valued at $190.6 billion by 2025.
