3. Arwa Alghuneim

Age: 28
Occupation: Postdoctoral Fellow at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSHRC)
Nationality: Saudi
Residence: Saudi Arabia
Category: Science & Technology

Alghuneim’s research centers on developing new treatment strategies for acute myeloid leukemia (AML). She collaborated with other researchers on this project all of whom are over the age of 30. They discovered that low doses of cisplatin, an FDA-approved drug for solid tumors, can be repurposed to induce DNA-damage-driven differentiation in AML cells, including resistant leukemic stem cells. Alghuneim is currently preparing her findings for publication in a leading journal. She also collaborated on a project that advanced a glycoengineering technique to modify the surface sugars of blood stem cells, improving their attachment and migration to the bone marrow and resulting in more efficient engraftment.
