Helmy was appointed chairman in 2024 having served as CEO since 2009. His late father, Hassan Abbas Helmy, founded Pharco Pharmaceuticals in Egypt in 1983. In May 2026, Pharco announced an investment of $29.3 million to support its regional expansion strategy, including the development of a 62,000sqm pharmaceutical plant in Saudi Arabia. The new facility will be built in partnership with Ashmore Investment and backed by the Saudi Industrial Development Fund. In 2026, Pharco also dedicated $12.7 million toward upgrading and expanding its existing manufacturing facilities, and around $9.7 million to establish an ophthalmic manufacturing line.
